Men kan een zekere aanleg hebben om een allergie te ontwikkelen. Deze aanleg is aangeboren en wordt overgeërfd van de ouders. Of men daadwerkelijk ook een allergie ontwikkelt tijdens het leven hangt af van een aantal externe factoren zoals: verstedelijking waardoor er minder contact met de natuur is; vast tapijt; doorgedreven hygiëne; verwarmde en goed geïsoleerde huizen; toename van de luchtvervuiling.

Vooral de toegenomen hygiëne en minder contact met de natuur in de eerste levensjaren lijken van groot belang te zijn in de toename van allergieën. Kinderen die op het platteland opgroeien ontwikkelen minder vaak een allergie. Verder blijkt blootstelling aan sigarettenrook ook een verhoogd risico in te houden in de ontwikkeling van allergieën.

Hoewel er een aantal risicofactoren bekend zijn die een allergie meer waarschijnlijk maken, is het zo dat allergie specialisten nog met veel vraagtekens zitten met betrekking tot het tot stand komen van allergieën.
